census of 2000, there are 10,944 people, 4,864 households, and 2,971 families residing in the city. The population density is 966.9/km² (2,504.4/mi²). There are 5,060 housing units at an average density of 447.1/km² (1,157.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 68.98% White, 23.87% African American, 0.05% Native American, 4.74% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 1.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,864 households out of which 24.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% are non-families. 33.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.85. In the city the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $43,625, and the median income for a family is $60,136. Males have a median income of $40,414 versus $30,537 for females.
