census of 2000, there are 6,149 people, 2,575 households, and 1,645 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,854.8/km² (4,789.9/mi²). There are 2,729 housing units at an average density of 823.2/km² (2,125.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 97.12% White, 0.60% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,575 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% are non-families. 29.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.92. In the borough the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males. The median income for a household in the borough is $35,828, and the median income for a family is $41,850. Males have a median income of $31,595 versus $21,934 for females.
