Red Faction

Red Faction is a computer game that was released in 2001 by THQ and Volition. Red Faction is considered to be a First-person shooter. It features online play, but lacks a central server to communicate game traffic, therefore all games must be hosted at the cost of the user (whatever that might be). Red Faction's storyline is based on a fictional company who near-enslave people to working on Mars in order to feed Earth's hunger for minerals. Those people eventually revolt.

The premire feature of the game was its 'GeoMod' technology which allowed the player to destroy the geometry, to effect in the game. For example, instead of opening a door, a player could blast through the rock surrounding the door.

Red Faction came out of the ashes of the cancelled Descent 4 project that Volition had been working on. Many ideas that was originally for Descent 4 can be found in Red Faction, for example, Red Faction's 'GeoMod' graphics engine was supposed to be used in Descent 4, and the main characer, Parker, was borrowed from Descent 4 as well. Many Descent fans consider Red Faction as Decent 4 even though the storyline and the game is totally different from the three Descent games.

The sequel Red Faction II was released for PS2 in October 2002, and then PC, XBox and GameCube. It takes place on Mars.
