Quern

A quern is a small, stone device for hand grinding grain to make flour for bread-making. Querns were widely used in Europe during the Iron Age, Roman period, and into early Mediaeval times. They fell out of use once mechanised forms of milling appeared, particularly the water mill and the windmill.
