Quarters

Quarters is a game in which a person bounces a quarter off of a surface in an attempt to have the quarter land, without another bounce, in a drinking glass on that surface. The drinking glass is filled with a beverage. The person bouncing the quarter is referred to as the "shooter".

If the quarter stops in the beverage glass, then the shooter is able to choose any player in the game to drink the beverage. The shooter then may make another attempt to bounce the quarter, or may pass the quater to the next player, who then becomes the shooter.

If the shooter fails to have the quarter land in the glass, then the shooter must drink all of the beverage, and must pass the quater to the next player, who then becomes the shooter.

Players are disqualified from the game when they cannot, or do not want to, consume any more beverage. The last remaining player is the winner.

The most common beverage used is beer, since it makes the continued drinking more filling, while diminishing the shooter's accuracy, thus increasing the difficulty further.

Local rules are often added to the game, violation of which usually requires the violator to consume a glass of the beverage. The game is most popular colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
