Premont is a city located in Jim Wells County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,772.

Geography

Premont is located at 27°21'29" North, 98°7'33" West (27.358064, -98.125766)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,772 people, 926 households, and 695 families residing in the city. The population density is 625.9/km² (1,622.6/mi²). There are 1,072 housing units at an average density of 242.0/km² (627.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 76.33% White, 0.54% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 20.89% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. 84.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 926 households out of which 37.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.95 and the average family size is 3.49.

In the city the population is spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,022, and the median income for a family is $27,917. Males have a median income of $22,569 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the city is $9,198. 33.8% of the population and 27.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 42.0% are under the age of 18 and 28.0% are 65 or older.

History

In 1908 Premont was founded by Charles Premont, for whom it was named, and Andrés Canales, who established a general store there. Premont donated the funds for building Santa Theresa Catholic Church, a Roman Catholic institution that now ministers to three missions. In 1909 a post office was opened at Premont. Between 1910 and 1912 the community was advertised as a highly productive agricultural region and attracted a large number of new settlers.
