Pocasset, Massachusetts

Pocasset is a village located in the town of Sandwich in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,671.


Pocasset is located at 41°41'27" North, 70°36'60" West (41.690761, -70.616581)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 25.4 km² (9.8 mi²). 9.7 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is land and 15.7 km² (6.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 61.91% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 2,671 people, 1,277 households, and 753 families residing in the village. The population density is 275.0/km² (712.8/mi²). There are 2,038 housing units at an average density of 209.8/km² (543.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.26% White, 1.27% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,277 households out of which 17.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% are married couples living together, 6.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.0% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 2.70.

In the village the population is spread out with 16.1% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 28.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 50 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $47,523, and the median income for a family is $62,596. Males have a median income of $43,889 versus $31,971 for females. The per capita income for the village is $26,866. 4.8% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 5.9% are under the age of 18 and 2.2% are 65 or older.
