Plankinton is a city located in Aurora County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 601. It is the county seat of Aurora County6.

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 601 people, 265 households, and 170 families residing in the city. The population density is 357.0/km² (920.6/mi²). There are 298 housing units at an average density of 177.0/km² (456.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.51% White, 0.00% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.99% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. 5.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 265 households out of which 25.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.89. In the city the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,019, and the median income for a family is $40,809. Males have a median income of $26,645 versus $19,531 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,611. 6.2% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line.
