Plainview is a city located in Hale County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,336. It is the county seat of Hale County6.

census of 2000, there are 22,336 people, 7,626 households, and 5,666 families residing in the city. The population density is 625.8/km² (1,621.0/mi²). There are 8,471 housing units at an average density of 237.3/km² (614.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 63.21% White, 5.87% African American, 1.13% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 26.53% from other races, and 2.77% from two or more races. 49.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,626 households out of which 40.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% are non-families. 22.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.82 and the average family size is 3.33. In the city the population is spread out with 31.0% under the age of 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $31,551, and the median income for a family is $35,215. Males have a median income of $26,434 versus $19,888 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,791. 19.1% of the population and 15.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 25.1% are under the age of 18 and 14.8% are 65 or older.
