Petersburg is a city located in Grant County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,423. It is the county seat of Grant County6.

There are 1,222 housing units at an average density of 289.5/km² (747.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.44% White, 1.57% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,086 households out of which 23.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% are non-families. 38.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.10 and the average family size is 2.75. In the city the population is spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 24.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 83.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $24,867, and the median income for a family is $32,941. Males have a median income of $23,654 versus $20,250 for females.
