Passaic is a city located in Passaic County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 67,861.

Passaic is the birthplace of Loretta Swit.


Passaic is located at 40°51'27" North, 74°7'44" West (40.857384, -74.128997)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²). 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.12% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 67,861 people, 19,458 households, and 14,457 families residing in the city. The population density is 8,424.8/km² (21,804.7/mi²). There are 20,194 housing units at an average density of 2,507.1/km² (6,488.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 35.43% White, 13.83% African American, 0.78% Native American, 5.51% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 39.36% from other races, and 5.04% from two or more races. 62.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 19,458 households out of which 42.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.7% are married couples living together, 21.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% are non-families. 20.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.46 and the average family size is 3.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 12.5% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,594, and the median income for a family is $34,935. Males have a median income of $24,568 versus $21,352 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,874. 21.2% of the population and 18.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.6% are under the age of 18 and 16.0% are 65 or older.
