Geography

\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,826 km² (705 mi²). 1,772 km² (684 mi²) of it is land and 54 km² (21 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.97% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 34,274 people, 12,232 households, and 9,014 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (50/mi²). There are 13,736 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 50.48% White, 48.36% Black or African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,232 households out of which 36.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.90% are married couples living together, 19.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.25. In the county the population is spread out with 29.40% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $26,785, and the median income for a family is $32,675. Males have a median income of $27,359 versus $19,088 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,075. 25.30% of the population and 21.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.30% are under the age of 18 and 25.20% are 65 or older.
