Owen County, Indiana

Owen County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana, and determined by the U.S. Census Bureau to include the mean center of U.S. population in 1920. As of 2000, the population is 21,786. The county's county seat is Spencer, Indiana.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,004 km² (388 mi²). 998 km² (385 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.68% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,786 people, 8,282 households, and 6,194 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (57/mi²). There are 9,853 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.21% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,282 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.30% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.20% are non-families. 21.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,529, and the median income for a family is $41,282. Males have a median income of $32,011 versus $21,782 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,884. 9.40% of the population and 6.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.00% are under the age of 18 and 8.00% are 65 or older.
