Ouida (1839-1908) was the pen name of the English novelist Marie Louise de la Ramée. De la Ramée was born in Bury St Edmunds, England on January 7, 1839. She derived her pen name from her own baby-talk nickname for "Louise." During her career, she wrote more than 40 novels.

Although successful, she did not manage her money well and died in poverty on January 25, 1908, in Viareggio, Italy.
