Oscoda, Michigan

Oscoda is a town in Michigan located at the mouth of the Au Sable River. It lies in Iosco County, not neighboring Oscoda County. Its 1990 census population was 1061 although 3,000 personnel were stationed at nearby Wurtsmith Airbase. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 992. Nearby is the Lumberman's Monument, in honor of the lumberjacks that first populated the area. Wurtsmith Airforce Base was located just outside town from 1923 to 1993. Wurtsmith was the site of an SAC nuclear-armed B-52 bomber squadron and an air refueling wing.

United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.5 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.37% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 992 people, 460 households, and 260 families residing in the town. The population density is 440.2/km² (1,135.7/mi²). There are 599 housing units at an average density of 265.8/km² (685.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.15% White, 0.40% African American, 1.21% Native American, 1.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 1.81% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 460 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.3% are non-families. 38.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.80. In the town the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.4 males. The median income for a household in the town is $30,000, and the median income for a family is $42,250. Males have a median income of $24,667 versus $22,772 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,191. 8.3% of the population and 4.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 6.4% are under the age of 18 and 0.0% are 65 or older.
