Order of St Patrick

The Most Illustrious Order of Saint Patrick was the highest Order of Chivalry in Ireland, akin to the Order of the Garter in England and the Order of the Thistle in Scotland. It was established in 1783. THe order became moribund with the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922, and the last Knight, the Duke of Gloucester, died in 1974. The order had only one grade, Knight, with postnominal initials KP. The Chapel of the Order was at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin.
