Operation Alsos

During the final days of World War II in Europe, the American military conducted Operation Alsos to seize German nuclear resources, materials and personnel to furtehr American research and to prevent their capture by the Soviets.

Alsos is Greek for “groves,” and so this designation is a play on the name of Major General Leslie M. Groves, the head of the Manhattan Engineer District, the American nuclear weapon program.

Included Operation Big, Operation Harborage and Operation Overcast.
