Newton is a city located in Baker County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 851. The city is the county seat of Baker County6.

1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.64% water.

census of 2000, there are 851 people, 320 households, and 228 families residing in the city. The population density is 112.9/km² (292.7/mi²). There are 346 housing units at an average density of 45.9/km² (119.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 43.60% White, 53.94% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 2.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 320 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.1% are married couples living together, 28.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 25.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.17. In the city the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older.
