Newport, Arkansas

Newport is a city located in Jackson County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,811. The city is the county seat of Jackson County6.

Geography

Newport is located at 35°36'43" North, 91°15'44" West (35.611820, -91.262158)1. Newport lies on the White River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.4 km² (13.3 mi²). 33.7 km² (13.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.03% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,811 people, 2,690 households, and 1,702 families residing in the city. The population density is 231.5/km² (599.2/mi²). There are 3,118 housing units at an average density of 92.4/km² (239.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 66.57% White, 31.76% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,690 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 17.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 33.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 16.7% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 84.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,151, and the median income for a family is $33,500. Males have a median income of $29,943 versus $17,437 for females.
