Nantucket (CDP), Massachusetts

Nantucket is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the town of Nantucket in Nantucket County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 3,830.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²). 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 36.60% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,830 people, 1,525 households, and 754 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 601.1/km² (1,555.8/mi²). There are 3,650 housing units at an average density of 572.9 persons/km² (1,482.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 82.61% White, 12.32% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.57% from other races, and 2.56% from two or more races. 1.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,525 households out of which 19.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.5% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 50.5% are non-families. 35.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.78.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 14.0% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 42.0% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 101.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $52,893, and the median income for a family is $64,239. Males have a median income of $40,410 versus $29,031 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $29,497. 9.1% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 2.2% are under the age of 18 and 5.4% are 65 or older.
