Mount Gilead is a town located in Montgomery County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,389.

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 1,389 people, 502 households, and 367 families residing in the town. The population density is 164.0/km² (424.2/mi²). There are 553 housing units at an average density of 65.3/km² (168.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 46.29% White, 50.04% African American, 0.50% Native American, 2.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 502 households out of which 31.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% are married couples living together, 20.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.14. In the town the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 80.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 74.4 males. The median income for a household in the town is $31,250, and the median income for a family is $36,250. Males have a median income of $29,375 versus $21,750 for females.
