Motoori Norinaga

Motoori Norinaga (本居 宣長 May 5 1730 - 1801 ) is a scholar during the time of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

His teachings emphasize the kokugaku which is based on denying all foreign influence on japanese culture. As central and most importand element of his teachings is the Kojiki. Any foreign and especially chinese influence, which had the greatest impact on japanese culture so far, could not originate from Amaterasu and was thus considered as toxication of the pure japanese culture.
