Geography\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 338 km² (130 mi²). 335 km² (129 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.93% water.
Demographics\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,740 people, 2,211 households, and 1,686 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (44/mi²). There are 2,515 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.84% White, 2.72% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,211 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.10% are married couples living together, 7.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.70% are non-families. 21.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.95.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 26.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who are 65 years of age or older.
