Montgomery County, Virginia

\nMontgomery County is a county located in the State of Virginia. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. As of 2000, the population is 83,629. Its county seat is Christiansburg6.

Geography

U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,009 km² (389 mi²). 1,005 km² (388 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 83,629 people, 30,997 households, and 17,203 families residing in the county. The population density is 83/km² (215/mi²). There are 32,527 housing units at an average density of 32/km² (84/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.00% White, 3.65% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 3.97% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. 1.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 30,997 households out of which 25.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.80% are married couples living together, 7.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.50% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.87. In the county, the population is spread out with 17.10% under the age of 18, 31.30% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 17.30% from 45 to 64, and 8.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 110.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $32,330, and the median income for a family is $47,239. Males have a median income of $33,674 versus $23,555 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,077. 23.20% of the population and 8.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.60% are under the age of 18 and 8.80% are 65 or older.
