The Moldavian SSR
was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union
. It comprised the area of Transnistria
, which had previously been an autonomous region of the Ukrainian SSR
and parts of Romania
that had been allocated to the Soviet Union
by the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact
The states name was changed to the Republic of Moldova in 1991, and it declared independence after the attempted coup in the Soviet Union.
