Milton is a town located in Sussex County, Delaware. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,657.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 1,657 people, 700 households, and 438 families residing in the town. The population density is 603.6/km² (1,568.5/mi²). There are 804 housing units at an average density of 292.9/km² (761.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 67.11% White, 24.32% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 6.04% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 8.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 700 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.3% are married couples living together, 20.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% are non-families. 31.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.90. In the town the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 78.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.8 males. The median income for a household in the town is $32,368, and the median income for a family is $40,313. Males have a median income of $26,065 versus $23,269 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,016. 18.0% of the population and 12.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 28.6% are under the age of 18 and 14.0% are 65 or older.
