Mililani Town, Hawaii

Mililani Town is a town located near the center of O'ahu Island, on the plateau or "central valley" between the two volcanic mountains that comprise the island. It is in the Ewa District and the City & County of Honolulu. The town is somewhat physically confined between the two large central O'ahu gulches of Waikele and Kipapa. As of the 2000 Census, the town had a total population of 28,608.

Although Mililani Town is essentially a large residential subdivision, it has commercial shopping centers, schools, parks, and a golf course, and resembles a modern American suburban town. Development has occurred on either side of Kamehameha Highway and mostly west of Interstate H-2. However, in more recent years, expansion has been to the east of the Interstate in the Mililani Mauka subdivisions.

Geography

Mililani Town is located at 21°27'4" North, 158°0'56" West (21.451109, -158.015600)1. Travelling north on either Kamehameha Highway (State Rte. 99) or Interstate H-2 connects the traveller with Wahiawā. Travelling south on either of these arteries connects to Waipi'o.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.1 km² (3.9 mi²) of which is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 28,608 people, 9,010 households, and 7,694 families residing in the town. The population density is 2,825.0/km² (7,319.1/mi²). There are 9,280 housing units at an average density of 916.4/km² (2,374.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 20.38% White, 3.07% African American, 0.19% Native American, 46.93% Asian, 4.55% Pacific Islander, 1.33% from other races, and 23.55% from two or more races. 7.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,010 households out of which 43.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.4% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.6% are non-families. 10.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.17 and the average family size is 3.41.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $73,067, and the median income for a family is $76,338. Males have a median income of $47,051 versus $31,976 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,427. 3.2% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.2% are under the age of 18 and 1.6% are 65 or older.
