Middlesex County is a county located on the Middle Peninsula in the State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 9,932. Its county seat is Saluda6.


\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 546 km² (211 mi²). 337 km² (130 mi²) of it is land and 208 km² (80 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 38.18% water.


\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 9,932 people, 4,253 households, and 2,913 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (76/mi²). There are 6,362 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (49/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.50% White, 20.13% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,253 households out of which 22.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.10% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 27.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.73. In the county, the population is spread out with 19.20% under the age of 18, 5.10% from 18 to 24, 22.90% from 25 to 44, 30.30% from 45 to 64, and 22.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 92.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $36,875, and the median income for a family is $43,440. Males have a median income of $30,842 versus $23,659 for females. The per capita income for the county is $22,708. 13.00% of the population and 9.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.70% are under the age of 18 and 10.70% are 65 or older.
