Middlesex County is located in the south central part of the U.S. State of Connecticut. As of 2000 the population was 155,071.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,137 km² (439 mi²). 956 km² (369 mi²) of it is land and 181 km² (70 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 15.90% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 155,071 people, 61,341 households, and 40,607 families residing in the county. The population density is 162/km² (420/mi²). There are 67,285 housing units at an average density of 70/km² (182/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.28% White, 4.42% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.56% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.97% from other races, and 1.56% from two or more races. 3.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 61,341 households out of which 30.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.80% are non-families. 27.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 31.10% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $59,175, and the median income for a family is $71,319. Males have a median income of $48,341 versus $35,607 for females. The per capita income for the county is $28,251. 4.60% of the population and 2.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.00% are under the age of 18 and 5.90% are 65 or older.
