Memphis is a city located in Hall County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,479. It is the county seat of Hall County6.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 2,479 people, 1,024 households, and 660 families residing in the city. The population density is 427.3/km² (1,105.2/mi²). There are 1,245 housing units at an average density of 214.6/km² (555.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 71.40% White, 9.08% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 17.63% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 26.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,024 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 33.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.03. In the city the population is spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 86.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $23,102, and the median income for a family is $27,367. Males have a median income of $24,620 versus $18,816 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,856. 23.9% of the population and 18.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 38.2% are under the age of 18 and 15.4% are 65 or older.
