Melbourne, Florida

Melbourne is a city located in Brevard County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 71,382.

It was the birthplace of Jim Morrison, the lead singer and lyricist of the popular American rock band The Doors.


Melbourne is located at 28°6'54" North, 80°37'55" West (28.115023, -80.631925)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 91.9 km² (35.5 mi²). 78.2 km² (30.2 mi²) of it is land and 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 14.91% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 71,382 people, 30,788 households, and 18,257 families residing in the city. The population density is 912.6/km² (2,363.9/mi²). There are 33,678 housing units at an average density of 430.6/km² (1,115.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 84.53% White, 9.33% African American, 0.34% Native American, 2.32% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. 5.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 30,788 households out of which 24.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.0% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.7% are non-families. 32.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.82.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,571, and the median income for a family is $42,760. Males have a median income of $32,242 versus $22,419 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,175. 11.5% of the population and 8.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 15.4% are under the age of 18 and 8.5% are 65 or older.
