\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 561 km² (217 mi²). 505 km² (195 mi²) of it is land and 57 km² (22 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.11% water.

There are 5,188 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.65% White, 1.24% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,304 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.70% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.20% are non-families. 20.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.94. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 26.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older.
