McLean is an unincorporated place located in Fairfax County, Virginia. Recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau as a census designated place (CDP), the community had a total population of 38,929 as of the 2000 census.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 38,929 people, 14,374 households, and 11,053 families residing in the town. The population density is 812.9/km² (2,104.9/mi²). There are 14,735 housing units at an average density of 307.7/km² (796.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.56% White, 1.58% African American, 0.10% Native American, 10.61% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 2.44% from two or more races. 4.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 14,374 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.3% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.1% are non-families. 18.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.05. In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 31.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $121,138, and the median income for a family is $137,610. Males have a median income of $93,065 versus $60,698 for females.
