Matsu

The islands are named after the goddess.


Matsu (松, pine) is the highest order of a traditional three-tier ranking system in Japan which has, from highest to lowest order, elements 松竹梅 (pine, bamboo, plum). It is also traditionally used to indicate size when ordering sushi.
