, and is a thriving farming area known for bloodstock. It is the seat of the Matamata-Piako District Council
, taking in the surrounding rural areas as well as Morrinsville and Te Aroha.
Matamata gained some attention when it was disclosed that a nearby farm was acting as the location for the Hobbiton set in Peter Jackson's film trilogy of Lord of the Rings.
