Lyon Township is a township located in Oakland County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 11,041.


\nAccording to the
United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 82.8 km² (32.0 mi²). 81.2 km² (31.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.00% water.


\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 11,041 people, 3,887 households, and 3,055 families residing in the township. The population density is 136.0/km² (352.3/mi²). There are 4,065 housing units at an average density of 50.1/km² (129.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.10% White, 0.35% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 1.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,887 households out of which 41.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% are non-families. 16.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.21. In the township the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.4 males. The median income for a household in the township is $67,288, and the median income for a family is $76,045. Males have a median income of $56,418 versus $31,565 for females. The per capita income for the township is $27,414. 4.2% of the population and 3.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.8% are under the age of 18 and 11.4% are 65 or older.
