Geography\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,543 km² (596 mi²). 882 km² (340 mi²) of it is land and 662 km² (255 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 42.86% water.
Demographics\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 455,054 people, 182,847 households, and 116,290 families residing in the county. The population density is 516/km² (1,337/mi²). There are 196,259 housing units at an average density of 223/km² (576/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.50% White, 16.98% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. 4.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 182,847 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.70% are married couples living together, 14.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.40% are non-families. 30.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the county, the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 29.10% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 92.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $38,004, and the median income for a family is $48,190. Males have a median income of $39,415 versus $26,447 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,518. 13.90% of the population and 10.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.70% are under the age of 18 and 8.70% are 65 or older.
