Geography

U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,323 km² (511 mi²). 1,288 km² (497 mi²) of it is land and 35 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.67% water.

census2 of 2000, there are 25,627 people, 9,945 households, and 7,259 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (52/mi²). There are 11,855 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.55% White, 21.58% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 9,945 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.00% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.97. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 29.90% from 25 to 44, 26.20% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.90 males.
