Longview, Texas

Longview is a city located in Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 73,344. It is the county seat of Gregg County6 and is situated in East Texas.

Geography

Longview is located at 32°30'33" North, 94°45'14" West (32.509147, -94.753909)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 141.8 km² (54.8 mi²). 141.6 km² (54.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.18% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 73,344 people, 28,363 households, and 19,116 families residing in the city. The population density is 518.1/km² (1,341.8/mi²). There are 30,726 housing units at an average density of 217.0/km² (562.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 70.10% White, 22.11% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.92% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 10.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 28,363 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,858, and the median income for a family is $42,378. Males have a median income of $33,078 versus $21,400 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,768. 16.0% of the population and 13.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 22.7% are under the age of 18 and 10.6% are 65 or older.
