1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 42.5 km² (16.4 mi²). 41.8 km² (16.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.83% water.

census of 2000, there are 12,529 people, 4,140 households, and 3,456 families residing in the town. The population density is 300.1/km² (777.3/mi²). There are 4,273 housing units at an average density of 102.3/km² (265.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.12% White, 3.28% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.35% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 2.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,140 households out of which 52.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.3% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.5% are non-families. 12.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.31. In the town the population is spread out with 34.1% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 39.2% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 5.0% who are 65 years of age or older.
