census of 2000, there are 9,482 people, 4,013 households, and 2,524 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,957.8/km² (5,074.6/mi²). There are 4,196 housing units at an average density of 866.4/km² (2,245.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.13% White, 3.74% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.91% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 5.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,013 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.92. In the town the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.8 males.
