Lincoln University

There are several universities named Lincoln University.

Lincoln University is a four-year university in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1854 as the Ashmun Institute, it was renamed Lincoln University in 1866 to honor President Abraham Lincoln. It currently provides undergraduate and graduate coursework for approximately 2,000 students.

Lincoln University has many distinguished alumni, including Langston Hughes, Thurgood Marshall, Hildrus Poindexter, Roscoe Lee Browne, Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Kwame Nkrumah. From 1854-1954, the university was a leader among colleges in providing opportunities for African-Americans, graduating 20% of all African-American physicians and 10% of all African-American attorneys in the United States.

Lincoln University is an agricultural college in Canterbury, New Zealand. It began life in 1880 as the Lincoln School of Agriculture. From 1896-1961 it served students under the name "Canterbury Agricultural College", and was affiliated with the University of New Zealand until that institution's demise. From 1961 to 1990, it became Lincoln College, a constituent college of the University of Canterbury, until achieving autonomy in 1990 as Lincoln University. It is considered the oldest agricultural teaching institution in the Southern Hemisphere. As well as agriculture, horticulture and forestry, the Univeristy has diversified its courses to include commerce and management, sports science, recreation, and social sciences.

Lincoln University of Missouri is located in Jefferson City, Missouri. It was founded in 1866 by members of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry under the name "Lincoln Institute" for the purpose of providing an education to African-Americans through the combining of academics and labor. In 1921, it was officially designated a university by the state of Missouri and changed its name to "Lincoln University of Missouri". In 1954, it opened its doors to applicants of all races, and it currently provides both undergraduate and graduate courses.

Lincoln University is a private, nonprofit, non-sectarian university based in Oakland, California. It was founded in 1919 by Dr. Benjamin Lickey and was chartered under California law in 1926. It currently offers B.A., B.S., and M.B.A. degrees.

The University of Lincoln in Lincoln, England was opened in 1996.
