La Grange, Texas

La Grange is a city located in Fayette County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,478. It is the county seat of Fayette County6.

Outside of La Grange was a "Chicken Ranch", a prostitution facility. It was shuttered in the 1970s.

La Grange is the setting of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, a movie from 1982 about the Chicken Ranch.

Geography

La Grange is located at 29°54'30" North, 96°52'30" West (29.908262, -96.875025)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.3 km² (3.6 mi²). 9.2 km² (3.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.28% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,478 people, 1,792 households, and 1,146 families residing in the city. The population density is 484.3/km² (1,255.2/mi²). There are 2,067 housing units at an average density of 223.5/km² (579.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 74.27% White, 10.36% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 12.19% from other races, and 1.92% from two or more races. 20.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,792 households out of which 31.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% are non-families. 32.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,392, and the median income for a family is $39,718. Males have a median income of $28,631 versus $21,023 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,288. 13.4% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.6% are under the age of 18 and 9.0% are 65 or older.
