Klamath Falls, Oregon

Klamath Falls is a city located in Klamath County, Oregon. Originally called Linkville when George Nurse founded the town in 1867, after the Link River on whose falls this city sits. The name was changed to Klamath Falls in 1892-3, As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 19,462. It is the county seat of Klamath County6. The Klamath name for this place was Yulalona or Iwauna, which referred to the fact the Link River would flows upstream when the south wind blew hard. Their name for the falls was Tiwishkeni, or "where the falling waters rush".

Geography

\nKlamath Falls is located at 42°13'24" North, 121°46'39" West (42.223441, -121.777578)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 48.5 km² (18.7 mi²). 46.3 km² (17.9 mi²) of it is land and 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.54% water.

census of 2000, there are 19,462 people, 7,916 households, and 4,670 families residing in the city. The population density is 420.7/km² (1,089.5/mi²). There are 8,722 housing units at an average density of 188.6/km² (488.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.12% White, 1.02% African American, 4.44% Native American, 1.32% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 4.15% from other races, and 3.83% from two or more races. 9.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,916 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.0% are non-families. 32.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.99. In the city the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 101.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $28,498, and the median income for a family is $37,021. Males have a median income of $31,567 versus $22,313 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,710. 21.9% of the population and 16.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 26.8% are under the age of 18 and 9.5% are 65 or older.
