Kingston is a city located in Roane County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,264. It is the county seat of Roane County6.

1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.9 km² (7.3 mi²). 17.0 km² (6.6 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.40% water.


\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 5,264 people, 2,263 households, and 1,532 families residing in the city. The population density is 310.3/km² (803.7/mi²). There are 2,478 housing units at an average density of 146.1/km² (378.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.75% White, 3.55% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 0.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,263 households out of which 26.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 29.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.77. In the city the population is spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 88.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $34,071, and the median income for a family is $44,979. Males have a median income of $40,186 versus $22,971 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,301. 10.0% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line.
