Kihei is a town located in Maui County, Hawaii. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 16,749.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 16,749 people, 6,170 households, and 3,813 families residing in the town. The population density is 636.5/km² (1,648.6/mi²). There are 9,170 housing units at an average density of 348.5/km² (902.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 47.76% White, 0.74% African American, 0.48% Native American, 24.72% Asian, 7.85% Pacific Islander, 1.58% from other races, and 16.87% from two or more races. 7.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,170 households out of which 32.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 25.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.31. In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 36.2% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.3 males.
