Kermit, Texas

Kermit is a city located in Winkler County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,714. It is the county seat of Winkler County6.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 5,714 people, 2,097 households, and 1,585 families residing in the city. The population density is 882.5/km² (2,288.3/mi²). There are 2,592 housing units at an average density of 400.3/km² (1,038.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 72.65% White, 2.05% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 22.52% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. 47.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,097 households out of which 38.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.18. In the city the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $29,143, and the median income for a family is $31,690. Males have a median income of $29,596 versus $18,380 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,949. 20.4% of the population and 15.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.8% are under the age of 18 and 16.7% are 65 or older.
