Kaufman is a city located in Kaufman County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,490. It is the county seat of Kaufman County6.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 6,490 people, 2,179 households, and 1,579 families residing in the city. The population density is 377.4/km² (977.9/mi²). There are 2,310 housing units at an average density of 134.3/km² (348.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 67.83% White, 12.87% African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 15.92% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. 29.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,179 households out of which 40.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% are married couples living together, 15.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.39. In the city the population is spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,250, and the median income for a family is $38,983. Males have a median income of $29,637 versus $23,695 for females.
