Johannesburg is a town located in Kern County, California. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 176.

Geography

Johannesburg is located at 35°22'10" North, 117°38'20" West (35.369564, -117.638983)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.3 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.3 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 176 people, 85 households, and 45 families residing in the town. The population density is 27.7/km² (72.0/mi²). There are 133 housing units at an average density of 21.0/km² (54.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.48% White, 0.57% Black or African American, 1.14% Native American and 2.84% from other races, and 3.98% from two or more races. 5.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 85 households out of which 21.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.5% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.9% are non-families. 35.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.07 and the average family size is 2.70.

In the town the population is spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 31.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who are 65 years of age or older.
