census2 of 2000, there are 29,916 people, 10,890 households, and 8,004 families residing in the city. The population density is 437.9/km² (1,134.2/mi²). There are 11,890 housing units at an average density of 174.0/km² (450.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 68.92% White, 24.76% Black or African American, 0.50% Native American, 1.98% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 1.14% from other races, and 2.58% from two or more races. 3.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 10,890 households out of which 40.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% are married couples living together, 14.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.08. In the city the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.4 males.
